The effectiveness of the crystal deodorant is based on its antibacterial properties: it kills the sweat's bacteria, so that sweat does not smell. Crystal deodorant does not interfere with the normal function of the pores (block sweat glands, etc.) but is a natural and economical choice for deodorants. Antibacterial crystal deodorant can also be used to disinfect insect bites and post-shave wounds.

Potassium alum is a naturally occurring mineral crystal. It is a skin astringent, antiseptic and potential antibacterial agent. Potassium Alum inhibits the growth of odorous bacteria on the skin, but does not inhibit perspiration. For this reason it is used as a natural deodorant. This mineral is often used in traditional medicine, e.g. in Ayurveda it is called phitkari or saurashtri, and in traditional Chinese medicine it is called ming fan.

It is important to understand the difference between deodorants and antiperspirants. Deodorants (de-odour) are products that contain antibacterial ingredients that prevent the growth of odorous bacteria. Deodorants work by preventing odours, but they do not prevent the body from sweating naturally. Antiperspirants (antiperspirant) are products that block sweat glands and prevent perspiration. Conventional antiperspirants contain ingredients that block sweat glands, such as Aluminium chlorohydrate and Aluminium related products.
